The feet of this terrapin turtle have elongated toes with webbing in between them, giving the appearance of very long claws. This high quality porcelain replica is hand painted in dark brown with highlights of lighter brown and beige. It also has a very cute baby terrapin on its back!

The terrapin is a species of turtle that is found only on the North American continent from Massachusetts to Texas. They prefer to live in salt marshes and mangrove habitats. Although there is only one species of terrapin, separate names have been given to 7 sub-species. The Diamondback Terrapin is one of them.

The terrapin was considered a great delicacy and hundreds of thousands of them found their way into soup pots during the late 1800's. Sadly, there are not nearly so many of them anymore. So if you live in Florida, please try to not run over any of them when you are driving along the marshes.
